摘要

Among industrial gear oils, the sulfur-phosphorus (S-P) type extreme pressure (EP) gear oil is the most widely used by the industry. This study investigated the lubrication characteristics of two conventional S-P type EP gear oils, one with molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoTDC) friction modifier and one without. A test rig composed of two driver rollers was designed and built to simulate the general gear tooth contact running conditions. The friction coefficient, contact temperature and contact electrical resistance were measured for a range of slide-roll ratio, contact stress, two hardness, two temperatures and a range of rolling speed. The experiment results show that the gear oil contains MoTDC provided slightly lower friction. The effects of the additive become more profound under higher load, higher rolling speed, and larger sliding-rolling ratio. Its friction reduction was speculated to a formation of the boundary film that contains molybdenum sulfur compounds.
