The simulation of swath ship motion with controllable fin in longitudinal waves

In the previous studies the authors used the strip theory and frequency domain analysis to predict the motion of a SWATH ship moving freely in waves. The present paper offers a time simulation technique to evaluate the motion response of a SWATH ship with either fixed or controllable fin, in regular waves. Some improved techniques which are helplul for predicting SWATH ship motion more accurately are also taken into consideration, e.g. the surge effect and the nonlinear viscous effect. The solution of the time history for the equations of motions is obtained by 4th order Runge Kutta method. The corresponding hydrodynamic coefficients at each time step are calculated by a simplified technique which needs only one set of initial input of the ship configuration. Several fin-controlled methods are also proposed. The validity of the theoretical prediction is checked by correlation with the model experiments carried out in the NCKU-DNAME-towing tank. The comparisons show that the present technique can well be applied to predict the time simulation of SWATH ship motion with fixed fin. It is found that the technique developed here may offer some valuable contributions on the SWATH ship design in regular sea especially with the fixed or controllable fin effect and can be a good basis for ffiture studies in irregular waves.
