The wear mechanism of polyethylene cup in a bipolar hip prosthesis

摘要

Polyethylene was originally designed to contact with metal due to its relatively good abrasive wear characteristics compared to other polymers. However, in this case report, the polyethylene cup is directly against cartilage. It caused articular cartilage to be subsided and worn abrasively. Subsequently, the exposed subchondral bone led to catastrophic destruction of polyethylene, which caused acetabulum osteolysis. Thus, if this kind of bipolar prosthesis will be used clinically other polymers with better compliance directly against cartilage should be considered.
