A method for segmenting and labeling a gray-level volume data of human coxal bone is proposed. The volume data, reconstructed by linear interpolation of computerized tomography slices, contain the coxal bone, right femur and left femur. A knowledge-based three-dimensional deformable model for separating semi-connected regions in the data is developed. An edge operator called `position-oriented edge detector' is then designed. The deformable model utilized four energies including edge strength of gray-level voxel, edge strength of binary voxel, gray level of the voxel itself and second derivation value, to search for the boundaries of bony structures.
