Based on the steady-state simulations using FLUENT, the possibility of vortex formation was analyzed at the corner of two- and three-dimensional micro-channels that were subjected to sudden expansion. These simulations correspond to Re = 0.1-80. The results show that vortex forms in two-dimensional micro-channels when Re = 0.1. However, in three-dimensional simulations, the formation of vortex depends on the aspect ratio of the micro-channel and its inlet to outlet ratio. The inconsistency for two-and three-dimensional analyses is attributed to the fact that the depth of the channel is infinite and therefore the frictional loss on the wall in this direction is neglected. In the three-dimensional simulations, the depth of the micro-channel is finite. Hence, the frictional loss the wall produces affects the dependence of vortex formation on Reynolds number.
