Identification of the Quality of Labor Support and Labor Outcomes among Different Companionship in Indonesia Women

摘要

Purpose: Labor is one of the significant moments in women’s life time that affect women’s physical emotional and psychosocial behaviors Historically women always accompanied by someone during the labor course who will give the labor support Many studies have been supported that companionship during labor give benefits to the women during labor However the particular companion which leads to the best women’s labor outcomes has not been determined especially in Indonesia Therefore the purpose of this study was to identify the quality of labor support and labor outcomes among different companionship and to identify the relationship between labor support and labor outcomes in Indonesia women Methods: A descriptive and comparative retrospective study conducted at a teaching hospital in Bandung West Java Indonesia 102 women in labor who delivered by spontaneous delivery choose the companion present during labor were examined by the women’s labor outcomes which were pain scores total labor duration kinds of analgesia used and intention to have Cesarean Section through the chart review and self-report In addition the quality of labor support examined through the checklist form consists of emotional support comfort measure information or advice and advocacy Result: The statistical method to analyze the data used Kruskall Wallis test and Fisher’s Exact test as well as Post Hoc (the Dunn’s Q) test with alpha 05 as significance level for analysis In addition Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient and Point Biserial Correlation have been used to see the correlation between quality of labor support and labor outcomes Study found that there were significant differences in the comfort measure (H = 8 232 p < 05) and information/advice (H = 10 04 p < 05) among the three groups which were husband family and both husband and family group The finding was higher with companion of husband and family compared to the husband only There were significant differences only in pain score in the latent phase (H = 9 246 p < 05) and stage two (H = 7 424 p < 05) among the three groups and the pain score in the latent phase was lower when women were accompanied by husband and family as compared to the husband or family only However the pain score in the stage two was higher when women were accompanied by husband and family compared to the family or husband only Labor support was positively related to pain score in transition phase stage two stage three total labor duration and kinds of analgesia used in stage one Besides labor support was negatively related to pain score in latent phase active phase and kinds of analgesia used in stage two Conclusion: The role of husband and family who gave labor support was related to women’s labor outcomes Furthermore this study also supported that there were relationships between labor support and labor outcomes Health care provider may inform pregnant women during prenatal education about the companion of husband and family during labor who give comfort measure information or advice and advocacy that could lower the pain score in the latent phase the active phase and stage two as well as kinds of analgesia used in stage two of labor
