Thanks to the high Internet penetration and advanced mobile telecommunications technology nowadays people are able to connect to the whole world anywhere and anytime Especially with the emergence of mobile information and communications technology (ICT) devices (e g smartphone and tablet) and services (e g call SMS and app) people’s life quality has been greatly improved However the excessive usage of mobile ICT devices and services (MICTD&S) may lead to technology dependence The phenomenon of technology dependence on mobile device and service can be observed everywhere Users could easily check new posts and photos shared by their friends since the apps of social networking sites are available on mobile devices In fact continuingly checking social media on mobile devices has become a habit for many users This growing obsession could affect an individual’s mental and physical health and even put him/her into dangerous situations The aim of this study is to understand the motives of individuals who excessively uses MICTD&S and the formation of technology dependence Uses and gratifications theory network externalities and technology dependence are applied as the theoretical framework Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) are conducted to examine the discrepancy between hypotheses and empirical data and test whether the proposed theoretical model fits the empirical data Subsequently structural equation modeling (SEM) is applied to test the causal model and understand the relationship among constructs Empirical data collected from 512 Taiwanese MICTD&S users shows that there are significant characteristic differences among three study groups: non-technology dependence (TD) users possible-TD users and TD users SEM results reveal that except for information seeking social networking convenience relaxation network size and complementarity play important roles in predicting continuance intention to use MICTD&S which results in positive impact on technology dependence In order to further understand whether the factors of gratifications and network externalities have the effect on technology dependence mediation analysis is conducted The outcome reveals social networking convenience and relaxation are the three main factors predicting users’ technology dependence This study provides some managerial implications from the perspective of legislation devices and group treatments for government and health care center to handle the rising problems of technology dependence
